Auto Sales: Looking For Signs of Recovery

April 2009 new car sales in the U.S. market were down once again, a drop of 34.4% over April 2008. Moreover, nearly 40,000 fewer new vehicles were sold in April compared to March 2009, even with one more selling day for April.


Finding Good News Amongst The Carnage


Auto Sales: Looking For Signs of RecoveryReading some of the news releases from the manufacturers and you would think that April was a good month. Not surprising, since PR folks are looking for every possible ray of light and when they find one are eager to reflect the good news.


Take Ford: As the Blue Oval continues to map out its future, one where they’ll likely pass its chief rival, General Motors, sometime this year or next, the company was quick to emphasize the acceptance of their all-new mid-size sedans — the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln MKZ and the hybrid variants offered with the first two models. According to Autodata, Ford sales were off 31.5%, but the company sold more midsize vehicles than expected while also picking up market share. Best news of all, Ford passed Toyota in sales for the month.


Chrysler continues to struggle as its current bankruptcy state and pending relationship with Fiat unfolds. Although Mitsubishi posted the worst month over month loss of any full line manufacturer at 55.9%, Chrysler showed the biggest drop amongst the Big Six, falling 48.1% for the month. That bad news hasn’t stopped Chrysler from touting its good news which included both the Dodge Challenger and Chrysler Town & Country seeing a sales increase over the previous month while the Jeep Wrangler saw its sales increase by 7% over April 2008. Chrysler was also one of the most vocal in claiming that the market may have finally stabilized.


More Good News To Report


Among the other manufacturers offering their reports the following good news could be found:



  • Kia says that its all-new Soul, the Scion-like urban utility vehicle sold 3,228 units for April.



  • The Audi A5 increased 40% in sales over April 2008.



  • Sales for the luxury Hyundai Genesis continue to climb, reaching 2,076 units for the month.



  • Honda had the best performance of all Big Six automakers, dropping 25.3% for the month, its best month so far in 2009.  Sales of the redesigned Acura TSX are up for the year by nearly 6% over 2008.



  • Wounded GM continues to lead all manufacturers maintaining a 38,000 vehicle cushion over its closest competitor which for April was Ford. Monthly sales for April were actually up 11% over March. With Pontiac winding down and with Saab, Saturn and Hummer all expecting to be sold or closed down before the year ends, GM’s hold on the top position looks precarious at best.


Looking Forward to the Coming Months


The months ahead are a big question mark for all manufacturers as future sales hinge on two events: an economic recovery as well as a “cash for clunkers” program now being considered by the U.S. Congress.  An improvement in the former and the implementation of the latter could go far to stimulate sales, perhaps bringing about a sustained recovery.

2009 New York Auto Show: Hyundai Nuvis Hybrid Concept

HYUNDAI NUVIS CONCEPT MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT NEW YORK AUTO SHOW.


The world will have the opportunity to peer into Hyundai’s future when the Nuvis concept makes its world debut at the 2009 New York Auto Show.


The Nuvis is the eleventh signature concept car to have existence designed at the company’s California Design Center in Irvine, Calif. In addition to showcasing the brand’s cutting-edge capabilities, Nuvis also hints at a possible purpose direction for a future-generation crossover, blending attributes of a tall urban car and a meed utility vehicle.


Consistent with Hyundai’sitting pledge to lead all brands in U.S. fuel economy by means of 2015, Nuvis is powered by Hyundai’sitting Hybrid Blue Drive architecture, which uses breakthrough lithium polymer battery technology.


EVOLUTION OF THE DESIGN


In developing the initial sketches, Hyundai designers considered the interplay of natural, fluid elements with more rigid surfaces and structures to create the illusion of stanch motion. Specifically, designers studied the way water splits across and flows around the hull and sides of a boat, creating a wake, or the way wind shapes a snowdrift or flurries through trees. The living power of these elements is reflected in the Nuvis’ design.

“Our goal was to create a living machine, constantly moving, that the driver and passengers could be component of,” said John Krsteski, Hyundai Design manager. “There are no lines on or in this car that are standing still.”


In addition to invoking the sensation of irrepressible motion, the Hyundai design team took more practical matters into account as well. Nuvis is designed to accommodate the diverse interests of a modern, active couple. The Nuvis is meant to be comfortable starting its day at a desert retreat, arriving at the ski slopes in the afternoon and then cruising to a positive dinner that evening.


The design team sought to create a vehicle that would complement its environment, destitute of making a negative drive firmly together. The versatility of the vehicle’s design, combined with Hyundai’s Hybrid Blue Drive technology, accomplishes exactly this.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

The Nuvis has an assertive face demonstrated by the strong, hour-glass shape that frames the blue acrylic shield grille and aggressive headlamps, whose two glowing white rings are equivalent by a pair of red rings on the conclusion lights.


Perched on top of 22-inch wheels, Nuvis’ proportions are tall, strong and protective. The pair body-side lines set up a fluent water effect, giving the appearance of motion.


In addition to the dynamic angles and firm stance, the Nuvis boasts a host of unique exterior elements.


“One of the coolest attributes of Nuvis is that the defensive roof appears to float forward top of the body from one side the exercise of hidden pillars and high-contrast glass,” said Andre Hudson, Hyundai senior designer. “This effect starts at the headlamps and is carried all the way through to the taillights producing a tall, strong body-side and elevate.”


Large, gull-wing doors, either opened or closed, create unique front, rear and profile views. Blue ambient lighting cast transversely the body adds to the overall upscale feel of the vehicle.
An additional design element featured on the Nuvis is a brushed aluminum accent that spans the entire length of the vehicle. Normally, this type of well-adjusted is only found around the windows. HYUNDAI’S HYBRID BLUE DRIVE ARCHITECTURE


Hyundai’s all-new, homegrown Hybrid Blue Drive architecture helps define the Nuvis concept. Hyundai’s proprietary parallel cross-bred drive system mates the already-fuel efficient 2.4-liter Theta II engine to a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 30kW (205 N-m) electric motor for maximum fuel economy.


Hybrid Blue Drive has some all-electric mode and a parallel drive mode, meaning that the wheels are turned by power coming directly from the gasoline engine, or the electric motor, or both together, as conditions demand. This similar hermaphrodite drive architecture will serve as the foundation for future Hyundai hybrid drive vehicles, starting with the next-generation Sonata in the United States.


To maximize fuel economy, all of the Theta II’s greater driveline and cooling system components have been optimized to reduce friction, while the crankcase has been filled by low confrication oil.

2010 Subaru Outback Debut at NYC

Subaru of America, Inc. introduced the all-new 2010 Subaru Outback® at the New York International Auto Show today.


The fourth-generation of the World’s First Sport Utility Wagon® is a roomier and more capable interpretation of the vehicle that launched the crossover trend 15 years ago.


Distinguished by bolder and crisper styling, the all-new 2010 Subaru Outback delivers enhanced performance, comfort and frugality with the introduction of an all-new chassis and the new Subaru Lineartronic™ CVT (continuously variable transmission). Capability is enhanced with a segment-first swing-out roof rail and crossbar design and every improved 8.7 inches of ground clearance.


The all-new 2010 Subaru Outback is smart-sized compared to other crossover vehicles, featuring mid-size interior volume in an easy-to-maneuver and off-road capable wagon body. Subaru engineers have increased interior volume by towards 8 percent in a package that is actually shorter than the outgoing standard.

Efficient New Powertrains
The 2010 Outback 2.5i models are powered by a revised 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Boxer engine, teamed for the first time to a recent 6-speed manual transmission or the available new Lineartronic™ CVT.
