Daimler Acquires Stake In Tesla

Daimler Acquires Stake In Tesla

BOOM! That sound you heard was Tesla getting vindication and Mercedes announcing what could be the most important automotive partnership in a very long time. Today, Daimler, parent company of Mercedes, announced that they have acquired a stake in Tesla motors, darling of the EV car set, and that they will also be exchanging technologies.

Is this the deal that will put electric vehicles on the map for real?

Daimler took an equity stake of “nearly 10 percent” in Tesla Motors, and they are already planning to use some of Tesla’s technology when the German company launches the electric Smart ForTwo later this year. Company officials said that the deal would provide Daimler with batteries and the know-how needed to bring an electric car to market “at the highest possible speed,” What does Tesla get out of all this? A big pile of cash and, possibly, the parts and engineering expertise it needs to build the Model S sedan.

“Tesla brings expertise in the battery electric front. Daimler brings expertise in everything else. This will be a very productive relationship where both Tesla and Daimler benefit,” said Tesla CEO Elon Musk during a press conference from Daimler’s headquarters in Stuttgart.

Details of the deal were few and far between, but Daimler officials said its investment is “a double-digit million sum for a nearly 10 percent stake in Tesla Motors.” Not only does Daimler get a 10% stake, but the vice president of E-Drive and Future Mobility at Daimler, Herbert Kohler, takes a seat on Tesla’s board of directors. They will also provide components and engineering assistance to Tesla, presumably to aid in the development of the Model S sedan Tesla unveiled in March.

“We are about to combine the best of old and new school. We are both deeply convinced that electric powertrains will play a major role in sustainability mobility,” said Thomas Weber, director of group research at Daimler.

This looks like it’s going to be very, very interesting.

Here’s the press release:

Strategic partnership: Daimler acquires stake in Tesla

STUTTGART, Germany, and SAN CARLOS, Calif.,May 19, 2009

German automaker acquires nearly 10 percent of one of the leading electric vehicle companies

*

Automakers agreed to cooperate in battery systems, electric drive systems and vehicle projects

Daimler AG has acquired an equity stake of nearly 10 percent of Tesla Motors Inc. This investment deepens the relationship between the inventor of the automobile and the newest member of the global auto industry. Tesla is the only production automaker selling a highway capable electric vehicle in North America and Europe.

The two companies have already been working closely to integrate Tesla’s lithium-ion battery packs and charging electronics into the first 1,000 units of Daimler’s electric smart car. In order to benefit from each other’s know-how, the investment enables the partners to collaborate even more closely on the development of battery systems, electric drive systems and in individual vehicle projects.

“Our strategic partnership is an important step to accelerate the commercialization of electric drives globally,” said Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “As a young and dynamic company, Tesla stands for visionary power and pioneering spirit. Together with Daimler’s 120 years of experience in the automotive sector this collaboration is a unique combination of two company’s strengths. This marks another important milestone in Daimler’s strategy for sustainable mobility.”

“Daimler has set the benchmark for engineering excellence and vehicle quality for more than a century. It is an honor and a powerful endorsement of our technology that Daimler would choose to invest in and partner with Tesla,” said Tesla CEO and Product Architect Elon Musk. “Daimler is also on the leading edge in the field of sustainable mobility. Among others the lithium-ion pouch-cell battery developed by Daimler and especially designed for automotive applications is of interest to us. We are looking forward to a strategic cooperation in a number of areas including leveraging Daimler’s engineering, production and supply chain expertise. This will accelerate bringing our Tesla Model S to production and ensure that it is a superlative vehicle on all levels.”

Together on the road to electro-mobility

As part of the collaboration, Prof. Herbert Kohler, Vice President E-Drive and Future Mobility at Daimler AG, will take a seat on Tesla’s board of directors.

This long-term partnership with Tesla complements Daimler’s multi-facetted strategy to advance the electrification of the automobile. Daimler is also moving forward the industrialization of lithium-ion technology. In March, the company founded the Deutsche Accumotive GmbH, a joint venture with Evonik Industries AG. As a result, Daimler is the first vehicle manufacturer worldwide that develops, produces and markets batteries for automotive applications. This is based on a Daimler stockholding in Li-Tec, the German specialist for lithium-ion battery cells.

100 smart electric cars have already been undergoing large-scale trials in London since 2007. These electric vehicles are being tested in day-to-day assignments by fleet operators and private customers.

Later this year the smart assembly plant in Hambach, France, will start production of up to 1,000 units of the second-generation smart fortwo with electric drive, which will initially be used for mobility projects such as e-mobility Berlin or e-mobility Italy. This year Daimler is also starting small-series production of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class with a fuel cell drive system. In 2010 the company will introduce its first battery-powered Mercedes-Benz. As of 2012, Daimler plans to equip all smart and Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles with own produced lithium-ion batteries.

In 2004, Tesla began development of its first electric vehicle, the Roadster, which remains the only highway capable EV for sale in North America or Europe. The Tesla Roadster is the first production battery electric vehicle to travel more than 200 miles per charge and the first US- and EU-certified lithium-ion battery electric vehicle. This green supercar accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds yet gets the equivalent of 256 miles per gallon. The Roadster, which travels an estimated 244 miles per charge with zero tailpipe emissions, is the first production vehicle to break the historical compromise between automobile performance and efficiency.

The Tesla Model S builds upon the success of the Tesla Roadster by leveraging its technology into the world’s first fully electric sedan. Based in Silicon Valley, Tesla unveiled the Model S in March and plans to produce it in California starting in late 2011.

2009 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Review

2009 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Review

I knew what to expect last week when they dropped off Hyundai’s new Genesis luxury sedan. Ever since the Genesis line was announced, they’ve been touting how the car in on-par with Lexus and Mercedes at a much lower price point. But when the car actually pulled up into the driveway, it was still hard to believe I was looking at a Hyundai. The car is most often confused with a Lexus (this happened multiple times,) but also has hints of Mercedes, BMW, and even the ultra-premium Maybach luxury sedan.

You can get the Hyundai Genesis Sedan in two engines - a 290 hp 3.8-liter V6 (which I assume would be perfectly adequate,) or an excellent 4.6-liter 375 hp V8. We only get one transmission choice with the Genesis, which is a good mate for this car - a 6-speed automatic with Shiftronic.

The car we got was a fully loaded model, which had the excellent 4.6-liter 375 hp V8 engine, and included the only option available - the Technology Package. This $4,000 option includes a 528-watt Lexicon audio system with 17 speakers (whoa,) and 7.1 surround sound, 40 GB hard drive-based navigation system with in-dash 6-disc DVD, rear back-up camera, driver information system, adaptive HID auto-leveling headlights (the ones that pivot when you turn a corner,) front and rear parking assist radar, and a cooled driver’s seat. That’s a lot of stuff for $4,000; typically a nav system alone will add $2,000.

2009 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Review

Amazingly, a lot of what would normally be an option comes standard on the Genesis 4.6 - Automatic headlights, power heated and auto-dimming side mirrors, premium leather seating with heated seats, leather-wrapped door and dash trim inserts, power tilt & telescopic steering column, cruise control, proximity entry with push-button start (meaning you never have to actually touch the key,) wood & leather steering wheel, power rear sunshade, rain-sensing wipers w/auto defogger windshield, two-zone front auto climate control, electrochromic rear-view mirror, USB and aux audio input, Bluetooth, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a Lexicon 14-speaker surround sound 6-disc audio system. Whew! In other words, it’s perfectly OK to order the car without any options - it’s a luxury car from the start so it doesn’t skimp on the features. For safety, we get ABS, Traction Control, Stability Control; front, front and rear seat-mounted side, and roof-mounted side curtain airbags. All standard of course.

What we Liked

See above. The fact that so much equipment comes standard on a car that starts in the low-$30K’s is amazing, and a Technology Package that includes as much as it does at only $4,000? We’re off to a very good start before we even drive the car.

2009 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Review

Thankfully, the Genesis doesn’t disappoint there either. Starting from the beginning, both front and rear passengers and driver have more than enough room at any height, and the leather interior is of very high quality. The driver’s seat heats and cools your heiney with three different intensities, the LED interior lighting illuminates the interior with cleaner white light than your typical incandescent yellow bulb, and the steering column moves up & down and in & out with one power switch. Start the engine with the push-button start, throw it into reverse, and on comes the rear back-up camera get too close to something and the system will let you know. While in reverse, the side mirrors automatically move downward to help your field of vision while reversing, and then move back once you’re in drive.

Driving the Genesis is what you would expect from a luxury sedan. All movements are smooth. Shifts are barely noticeable, steering is even and mild, suspension is soft, and acceleration - while a powerful engine - swells instead of jerking you back into your seat. While the suspension is soft and smooth, don’t expect to confuse it with a Mercedes-Benz that costs twice the price. It may be close, but let’s be reasonable. Steering is smooth and precise with very little body roll. Seating is more than comfortable all-around, as the seats let you sink into them like a sofa.

The car is very attractive inside and out, and only one person I spoke with didn’t like how the exterior looked. She said it looks like it’s trying too hard to clone the looks of other luxury brands. Bits of Mercedes, pieces from BMW, and parts from Lexus. A valid point, but an attractive design overall which you will never mistake as anything but a luxury sedan. Interior design is also very attractive with LEDs, soft glowing, and electroluminescent gauges. The center console and dash are smooth and flowing and controls are generally easy to figure out. Hyundai seems to be taking over the controls from BMW’s iDrive and Audi’s MMI system, with one large knob that controls the whole system. It does a fairly good job at everything, but could use a bit of work on the interface navigation.

A few other quick notes about the many things I like on the Genesis - you can use the GPS while moving unlike many other systems, which don’t consider that you might have a passenger with you. I wouldn’t buy a car with a nav system that locks you out while moving, so I commend Hyundai on this. The interior trim, fit and finish is excellent, and belongs in a much more expensive car. Standard iPod connectivity (even though it didn’t work right) and audio connectors (USB and aux) are great to have, and the sound system is very good. Power from either engine is very good for its class, and if you can afford the V8, go for it. You’re getting an expensive engine in a luxury car for a bargain. Lastly, I’m very happy Hyundai went with a rear-wheel-drive layout for the Genesis, although an AWD option would be nice in a future model.

I could clamor on all day about how good this car is, but suffice it to say that it exceeds expectations. Let’s get to what isn’t so great about the car.

2009 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Review

What we Didn’t Like

To be honest, I really had to think about this for a while, but I did find a few details that should be fixed for the 2010 model. First, the rear seats don’t fold down. The trunk is large enough for most, but folding rear seats would create extra cargo room for longer objects which might not fit through the small pass-through. Also, there are a couple minor features that are standard in other cars in this price range which are absent in the Genesis, such as a lane change blinker (blinks 3 times then stops when pressed slightly,) and speed-sensitive volume control (audio volume increases proportionately with speed to compensate for road and wind noise.) I would also like to see the design of the steering wheel controls smoothed out - it’s a bit cluttered as-is. Lastly, I did have a problem with the USB connector - it freaked out when I connected my iPhone, didn’t recognize it, and made the iPhone think I was plugging and unplugging it twice a second until I took the connector out. So despite the iPod integration, it doesn’t support the iPhone via USB. You can, however still use the standard auxiliary jack for any MP3 player, including the iPhone.

Before You Buy

Laugh in the face at those who can’t look past the Hyundai badge - you’re a savvy shopper who doesn’t care about no high-falutin’ brand name, but about what you get for your money.

If you’re looking to buy an entry level luxury sedan and you don’t look at the Hyundai Genesis, shame on you. It may have a Hyundai logo on the back of it, which used to mean undesirable and boring, but not anymore. Hyundai has reinvented themselves in the past few years, and they’ve sealed it with the Genesis. Probably the best bang for the buck on the market right now if you’re looking for a luxury car.

Command Fab Design has finished Maybach 57S!

The command of designers FAB had sights at a sedan with low landing when they have bumped on Maybach 57S which became a basis for an exclusive tuning whale. The reason on which experts FAB have chosen the truncated model 57S consists in thought that this car is ideally suited for the billionaire, preferring to drive the car independently. Magnificent Maybach 57S hides under a cowl the 650-strong engine with two turbines which twisting moment reaches 1025 Nanometers. Speed from 0 to 100 km/hour the car develops all for 4,9 seconds, and its maximum speed makes 303 km/hour. The tuning command has made a body 57S from FAB wider, rather than at serial model. Around each of wheels the tiny fans submitting air for cooling of brake blocks are located. Besides, additional cooling is provided at the expense of the modernised front bumper. The car have equipped with 20-inch disks "put" in the tyres which size makes 265/30 and 325/25 for front and rear wheels accordingly. The interior «finished to mind». Accessible options are added by a multimedia player iPod and not cheap entertaining system.

The Maybach Exelero is a high-performance sports car designed and built by German luxury car manufacturer Maybach, and presented in May 2005 in Berlin, Germany. The 700 hp (SAE) (514 kW) two-seater with a bi-turbo V12 engine is a one-off design commissioned by Fulda Tyres. Fulda is using this car as a reference vehicle to test a new generation of wide tires. The German luxury car manufacturer created the one-off model as a modern interpretation of its legendary streamlined sportscar from the 1930s. There are various allusions to the historical predecessor, which was likewise based on a powerful Maybach automobile, in this case the Maybach SW 38, and was also used by Fulda for tire testing.

Maybach 57S Pimped by Fab Design

Maybach 57S Pimped by Fab DesignThe idea of a low-flying saloon seems to have been upmost on the FAB Design team's minds when they chanced upon the Maybach 57 S. The Daimler car would form the basis for the tuning kit you see here. FAB chose the shorter 57 S specifically because it's the one considered better suited for the self-driving multimillionaire.

Hurling the car forward is a 650hp (478kW) biturbo engine making maximum torque of 1,025Nm. FAB says the heavy saloon will quickly sprint from 0 - 100km/h in 4.9 seconds and stop accelerating at 303km/h.

Outside it sports a body that is 30 centimetres wider than the factory car. There are air vents on the side of each wheel in order to provide extra cooling air for the brakes. The front apron is also designed to scoop more air into the engine bay for cooling purposes. Tyres used are 265/30 and 325/25 front and rear with rims measuring 20-inches in diameter.

When it came to the interior FAB decided to go cream and blue. Lots of leather and Alcantara surfaces that are contrasted with sky blue accents decorate the interior. For entertainment there are plenty of choices to make, from iPod connections to a multi-cinema entertainment system.

FAB Design plans to only produce 15 units of this car.
